Freshwater green mud

Freshwater green mud, or sapropel, is a fine-grained sediment that builds up on lake beds over thousands of years. It forms from the remains of water plants, plankton and other aquatic life, together with mineral particles. The sediment accumulates at an average rate of 0.1 to 6.6 mm a year, depending on the lake and climate. MARENCE uses mud from a lake where the layer of mud has been building up for about 7,000 years. The lake is in Rāzna National Park in Latgale. The mud is used for masks and mud applications.
