Face scrub vs enzyme peel: how they differ

Our scrub and our peel differ in their ingredients and in the way they are used. The scrub contains jojoba wax granules and is worked into a lather on damp skin, then rinsed off. The peel, whose ingredients include Bacillus ferment and lactic acid, goes on in a thick layer and is massaged for 5-10 minutes. Choose by zone and routine. The peel is meant for the face and neck, the scrub for the face.

In short

  • In the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) guide to exfoliating at home, a scrub counts as mechanical exfoliation.
  • How often to use the peel depends on skin type, from 2-3 times a week to once every 7-10 days.
  • The peel lists 17 ingredients and the scrub 26; 9 appear in both, freshwater green mud extract among them.

Is an enzyme peel the same as a scrub?

In the broad sense, yes, if every way of exfoliating counts as a peel. AAD’s guide defines exfoliation as removing dead skin cells from the outer layer of the skin and names two main methods for home use. Mechanical exfoliation uses a tool or a scrub “to physically remove dead skin cells”, while chemical exfoliation uses chemicals to dissolve them.

Our scrub fits the first method: its granules are moved over the skin during massage. Enzymes appear in neither group. The guide also advises choosing the method by skin type. Exfoliation, it warns, is not for everyone, and if not done properly it could do more harm than good.

What is in the scrub, and how do you use it?

Our face scrub (30 g) combines spherical jojoba wax granules, which remove dead skin cells during massage, with a foaming agent derived from oat amino acids that cleanses the skin.

Start by cleansing your face with our Cleansing Foam. Then apply the scrub to damp skin, work it into a lather, massage gently and rinse off with warm water.

What is in the peel, and how do you use it?

Enzyme Peeling, 30 g, is our peel for the face and neck. Its ingredient list includes Bacillus ferment and lactic acid.

Prepare the skin with our Cleansing Foam PLUS and pH Balancing Face Toner. Apply a thick layer to clean, damp skin and massage lightly for 5-10 minutes. Remove the excess with a damp tissue or rinse it off with warm water.

How do the two routines differ?

Both go on damp skin and are massaged; preparation, application and removal differ.

Tip

After the scrub or the peel, use our Face Toner and then a suitable face cream. AAD advises applying moisturiser straight after exfoliating, because exfoliating can be drying to the skin.

How often should you use the peel?

The peel’s description recommends using it once a week. Its How to use tab sets the frequency by skin type:

  • 2-3 times a week for oily and problem skin;
  • once a week for normal, combination and mature skin;
  • once every 7-10 days for dry skin.

The description’s once a week matches the figure for normal, combination and mature skin. The peel can be used all year round.

AAD ties frequency to skin type and exfoliation method and notes that, generally, “the more aggressive the exfoliation, the less often it needs to be done”. Over-exfoliating could leave skin red and irritated.

How do you spot a scrub in an ingredient list?

By the granules. In the scrub’s ingredient list they appear as Hydrogenated Jojoba Oil, which has an abrasive function in CosIng, the European Commission’s database of cosmetic ingredients. The foaming agent from oat amino acids is Sodium Lauroyl Oat Amino Acids, with Coco-Glucoside further down the list.

Function listed in CosIng

  1. 1 Hydrogenated Jojoba Oil: abrasive, skin conditioning
  2. 2 Sodium Lauroyl Oat Amino Acids: cleansing
  3. 3 Coco-Glucoside: cleansing, foaming

In the peel’s list, look for Bacillus ferment and lactic acid.

Function listed in CosIng

  1. 1 Bacillus ferment: skin conditioning
  2. 2 Lactic acid: buffering, humectant
  3. 3 Panthenol: skin conditioning

Important

A substance’s function in CosIng is not the same as what the whole product does.

Of 17 ingredients in the peel and 26 in the scrub, 9 appear in both lists, among them water, glycerin and our freshwater green mud extract, listed as Limus (Freshwater Green Mud) Extract.

The product descriptions also name jojoba and camelina oils, aloe vera juice, vitamin E, hydrolysed elastin and hyaluronic acid for the scrub, and panthenol, allantoin and chamomile extract for the peel.

The ingredients quoted in this article match the product pages as of 28 October 2026; the current ingredient list is on the packaging.

Which one should you choose?

Key point

Both product pages describe their product as suitable for all skin types, so the pages do not divide the scrub and the peel by skin type. The choice comes down to the zone and the way each is applied; skin type affects how often you use the peel.

  • If your neck is part of the routine, choose the peel, made for the face and neck.
  • Pick the peel when you can give it 5-10 minutes of massage on damp skin.
  • Choose the scrub if you want a product you lather on damp skin after cleansing and rinse off with warm water.

You will find both in our Face Cleansing section.

What not to do

  • Do not let the peel dry on your skin, as its instructions say.
  • Keep the scrub and the peel away from your eyes.
  • AAD says never to exfoliate skin that is broken, for example by open cuts, or sunburnt.
